CES>Jake, I am not a schoolteacher. My last name just happens to be "Schoolcraft". I go by my initials (as my main alias), CES, but I am also known as:
CESchoolcraft, CES Mastermind, and Lobsterman.
Also, because my first name is "Colby", I am known as Cody, Tody, etc...

Also, I won't use those words anymore, WinterKight (I rarely use them anyway, except on my new chat group that tries anything to make people leave a chat area.)

Just a note: if anybody is interested in joining, e-mail me.

Also, my website is down for a while. Just access it manually at www.angelfire.com/me2/colby.

Hoody>CES: [Re your slow connectiong]

What computer are you using? On my 386DX40,
Arachne was REALLY SLOW, sleeping after only 500
bytes received. Pressing Ctrl while clicking on
the link speeds it right up.

The thing is when I got on my "new" 486SX33
Arachne was a lot lot faster. I think it has
faster video, or that its limited to 640x480
[386 running at 800x600].

Us on the Arachne List came to the conclusion
that Arachne was too busy updating the screen to
worry about what was coming through the
internet. Thus it misses the next packet and has
to wait 30 seconds for the server to time-out
and re-send.

Another theory was that high-speed modems was
too fast, causing packet collisions or major
errors. But the 386 was running at 9600bps; 486
is at 115200 so I don't think so.

BTW, look at the i.am place for a really cool
URL. eg http://i.am/colby is something you may
like. :)

Mon May 3 00:13:31 1999
daybrown>Between my ISP, noisy phonelines, and possibly
corrupted arachne, the latest wrinkle is no more
mail. Their server suddenly found msgs it had
spaced and yesterday's packet listed 437 msgs,
but it aborts on the 300th. Now it is up to
567 or so, and on every retry tries to send out
the first 299 which cam thru fine.

is there some command that I can ask it for some
number of msgs on each connect?

would like to see what the software has to

CES>Hoody, my original question - do you have any
parts that you want to give away/sell? I like
working on computers to use for myself, or just
to sell/trade.

Does anybody know why FTP downloads don't work?
I have to do HTTP downloads with Arachne
(because FTP doesn't work), and FTP with
NetTamer (because HTTP doesn't work). Is my
machine psycho or am I?

About your question, WinterKnight, you should
know that a BBS can't provide the internet. It
is just connected to the Internet E-mail. I use
the same number and enter PPP at startup
instead of 1 (1 enters the BBS, also I have to
dial manually). Because I am borrowing, you may
say, my friends' account, I can't use his
e-mail. Is this what you wanted to know?

proxy servers. Unfortuneatley, some proxy
servers don't work properly with Arachne [eg
authenticating ones]. When you use Netscape/IE,
do you type your password after or before you
dial to the internet? If its after [or both],
you probably have a crappy server. There's no
easy way around it.

Thu May 6 16:46:59 1999
Black>Blah. I'm using jpIRC hehe. It only woks with PPPD
And you also have to have ntcpdrv.zip which you can get from ftp.trumpet.com/ blah blah blah somewhere in there. hehe

Thu May 6 16:49:59 1999
Black>So you have to make a connection with your ISP then run pppd like this. (For me My modem is Com 2 and my speed is 28.8 so i put 38400)
pppd com2 38400 and after that it'll either say "PPP Link is down, Packer driver not loaded" or "Packet handler on vector 60x" something or other.
if you get the vector one it means your good to go and then you have to run ntcpdrv.exe by simply type ntcpdrv and it should run and display your IP address to you. (The one you got when you connected to ppp on pacifier.)
and then run jpirc and you should be good to go.

Thu May 6 22:28:14 1999

WinterKnight>CES, hold it. What do you mean by "Arachne says
that the APM is not installed", when you go to
an IRC site? Exactly, how do you try to run
jpIRC? If you tried to type the server address
in the URL field, dont. Go to Desktop, Your
applications, And then click on IRC or jpIRC.
You have to run it manualy. Automatic launch
of an IRC client will only be implemented
once someone will agree to work on the
IRC-Client autoconfigure, or a better
client will be found.

I am having another problem - I did another
install of 1.49. Now, I am having typing
problems - it takes about a second to delete 4
characters on the URL space. What is the
problem here?

WinterKnight>CES, 2 things:
1)I checked the DSDP again. Its a real ZIP file
(I looked inside it), and I had no problem
downloading it. With arachne.
2)There is no known IRC client for DOS with GUI.
However, it does exist as a wish in the DSDP
wishlist. Who knows.. maybe one of these days
a bored programmer will make a mIRC like IRC
client for DOS? (hint hint).
You can use the IRC client from trumpt which
I heard has a basic GUI, however I never managed
to run it.

WinterKnight>[Butane], Arachne will not work with Windows
dialup software. Also windows winsock software
will not work with Arachne. Windows and DOS
TCP/IP stacks are using 2 very diffrant ways
to work, and Arachne is (obviously!) not a
Windows application. Arachne was also designed
for DOS computers, not Windows.
Regarding the applications you mentioned, you
can get a DOS IRC client and a DOS ICQ port
(not from Mirabilis) that will allow you to
access these services.
I heard once of a connector from UKA_PPP that
could connect DOS applications via the Windows
Dial-Up, but I couldnt find it. So until
then, DOS PPP stacks and Windows dial-ups
are two completly diffrant and separeted
universes.

its using text commands. :)

I've found that, when using tables for text simply to limit the line-length to 550pixels or whatever, Arachne needs the use of </P> tags, or else the paragraphs are displayed superimposed. My first solution was to put each paragraph in its own table!

WinterKnight>Jen, Arachne can accept cookies.
Unfortunatly, I do not think that the support
is complete.. the cookies work with 99% of the
sites I visit, however I know of a site that
will accept any cookie from any Browser..
unless its Arachne or DR-WebSpyder. I didnt
tried Lynx yet. That site is using Apachne,

Bernie>Oh, yes I thought about that later in the day and figured that I didn't see the incredible ammount of mail that you send to SurvPC in the Arachne list.
Well, it's safe, but it lacks some of the better parts of the SurvPC list (seeing your own mail) and it's slower when sending out new mail.
But it's good to keep in contact what's new with Arachne (and I do mean real new then, not like the pages here or arachne-announce mails).
You all missed the bug-fix for 1.50B2, easiest sollution is still to copy an old one, or get the latest (hopefully correct) from my homepage.

CES>Well, I have a problem to report.

With my 386SX/25, loading of the extra
things in 1.5b2 (the popup buttons,
write/read file buttons, etc) load too
slowly. There should be an option to turn
this off, and make it perform like the
older versions of Arachne.

Another problem is a HUGE slowdown, some
image loading problems (backrounds aren't
complete) and extra hard disk activity
(caused by Arachne trying to load all of
these extra things). Sometimes hard disk
activity interferes with page loading,
and stops it - slowing things down
dramatically.

Just an extra note I had to add - after
entering this message and clicking on
Nick:, it took about 4 second. Blah!

WinterKnight>PT, the problem with PCI modems is that they are
Plug and Play (CES, this doesnt mean they have
to be WinModems.). A friend of mine claims that
once he configured his modem via Windows once,
he could continue to access it via DOS after
that. I dont know for myself, but this might
work. However, if the modem is indeed a WinModem
as CES suggested.. sorry. It will only work with
Windows in the background.

CES>WinterKnight, you are partially correct. A
plug-and-play modem can run with DOS drivers,
as with Windows. If the modem could run in DOS,
then the problem would not be with the
plug-and-play, but the fact that the modem is a
windows-only modem. Get it? Let me simplify - a
PnP with DOS drivers would't have the probs,
yet a PnP with Windows drivers would. :)

Thu May 20 17:04:51 1999
http://i.am/hoody
Hoody>Ron: there is no real difference. But since you
dont seem to be in the US, pick 8 bit or
quoted-printable so you can access letters not
in the first 7 bits of ASCII.

FYI, quoted-printable pretends to be 8 bit while
taking 7 bits. this is useful when sending
through servers that dont like the extra bits,
and the client on the other side puts it back
into 8 bit viewable.

Kip: There is no javascript at all in Arachne.
But try DR-Webspyer from www.calderathin.com
which seems to have it [I never tested]. It's
based on Arachne, but needs a 386 and a few megs
of RAM.

JS would be quite hard to implement IMHO, esp in
a DOS browser that needs to fit into a 'measly'
500k [needs some for the packet driver]. The big
browsers take several 10s of megabytes before
attempting to do *anything*. So Michael has got
to be congratulated. :)

Thu May 20 19:11:25 1999
http://members.xoom.com/dsdp/
WinterKnight>I got DR-WebSpyder. Its nice, smooth, crash
less.. BUT. If your idea of internet browsing
is running several types of internet
applications, without being restricted only to
WWW (not even FTP), and only be able to download
Zip file, and getting a really basic capability
E-Mail client.. forget it. :) The only 4
advantages DR-WebSpyder has over Arachne are
its stability, great support for frames and
Animated gifs, and beta-level JavaScript.
However, that browser was designed for
WebTVs and internet-kiosks. So its not
as flexible as Arachne. Arachne beats WebSpy
when it comes to PC internet browsing. (and
several other browsers I know.). So, i'll stay
with Arachne.. :) for now, the highest level of
JavaScript availble is simply its ability
to ignore JavaScript. In the future, this very
well might be implemented. So lets wait and
see...

Since, I use this function a lot, is there a way
to go around this because Arachne seems to only
support one line copying. Is there a way to go
around this.
I think there is, there must be a file it copies
the information to, it doesn't copy to clipboard
(I don't think). It is possible to alter this

possible, right?

I'm also wondering about another thing, Window

there is but the ones I tried (MSE 1,2,

CES>Well, it looks like I am going to stick with IE3 for a while. When new Arachne downloads come out, I'll test them - once one is more reliable and faster than IE3 on my machine (which is definately possible), I will start using it.

The main drawback of both of the two is that you can't go anywhere while downloading, or you disrupt the download. Will Arachne ever have a backround downloading feature?

Sat May 22 15:17:48 1999
Jake>CES: When I downloaded MSIE3 (using Netscape) I was able to write a long email at the same time. I use FoxMail which is freeware. Try a right-click and "Save Target As" in IE to preserve a webpage's filename and save it quickly without downloading the images.
That Xedit is good - but better if it used "standard" copy/paste shortcuts and "remembered" the current directory.
With A1.5b2 I find a small problem: when I use tables purely as a means to limit line-length, and I have a section centered, the closing </center> tag has no effect: all subsequent content is centered. A simple work-round is to close the table and start a new one.
The animated GIFs display faster than in my Windows browsers, but some with slight damage are not displayed at all. One "psychadelic" page, made up of a checkerboard pattern of 2 anigifs "runs out of steam" and is reduced to 16 colors.

Sat May 22 17:45:46 1999

Hoody>CES: Non-WinModems don't need drivers. For
example I'm currently using a modem made by
Maestro, I used to have a RedBack and my
friend has a Banksia Wave modem. They're
all external and can be swapped around
without configuring software. :-P

BTW, My internal modem didn't need reconfiguring
as it is a 2400bps one.

If there is a 'driver' for a modem, the only
thing it really is a different set of "AT"
commands so the modem works the best.

Hoody, my system is worse than yours - Windows for Workgroups 3.11, IE, 398SX/25 w/4MB ram and a 10MB swapfile on my second hard disk. Beat that!

The comment about the 2400 bps modems - did Windows 95 take over then? I think not. 2400 bps are old, and (almost) all work (they are configed via jumpers, not drivers [some modems that require drivers are not PnP - strange]). (phew!)

I must try Opera again, with the MS dialer. It was not too good with Trumpet Winsock. I think version 3.2 had advantages over 3.5, like opening webpages offline from File Manager. Opera will save pages with images intact. Do an ftp-search for o320e16.exe for the Win3.1x version. The 32-bit version should be close by. Operasoftware.com don't keep old versions on their site.

I was wondering if anyone out there in virtual land can try to help me with debugging my problem with Arachne. everything seemed to load fine but the dialing never works right. I always says that there is no carrier. I am using a 486 with 8 Meg of RAM and a 14.4 modem. I know I haven't given enough info here for anyone to figure out the problem. Just wanted to see if anyone has the inclination first.

Thanks in advance,

Jake>I've been making a webpage with a 3-column table to display captions for named colors with their RGB and hexadecimal equivalents. The colorname and hex cells have their background color set by name or hex value, so you can check whether there's any
difference with their display by the browser. Arachne doesn't support all the colornames -- for instance any with "blue" in the name are all displayed as the same color blue. The file's
about 40KB and I'll put it up if anyone's interested.
The guestbook at www.operasoftware.com is about 100KB. It crashes MSIE3 sometimes, even trying to read it offline. It displayed quickly (offline) in Arachne.

tmptmp>Netriangle, what modem are you using? What
operating system?

Fri May 28 17:34:18 1999
Netriangle>tmptmp,

I am using win 3.1. So I am basically trying to run ARACHNE from real DOS. I have disabled com 2 in the Bios, set the jumpers on the modem to Com 2, IRQ 3. I am not sure what the dip switch settings are on the modem but I just downloaded a text file from the internet that should explain the jumper settings but I assume they have to do with stop bits, parity/non parity etc. and won't need to be changed. I have just reformatted the hard drive to start fresh and I might try and external 14.4 modem that I picked up. I will try to set up ARACHNE before I reinstall WIN 3.1.

I attempted to install WEBBOY also and had no luck with that in connecting to my ISP.

Thanks,
Doug Wright

Seo - Korean>To 'Or Botton' and others

I tried ttf2fnt to make Korean Font. But failed

I think this problem is originated from the
difference of Hangul (Korean character) Code.

Unlikely Alphabet, Hangul is 2 byte character.
In other words, to express 1 character with Hangul
, 2 byte (16bit) are needed.

But I think arachne support byte to byte change.

thanks anyway.

"Windows 98 Second Edition...also includes all bug fixes released since Windows 98's debut. Among them is a fix for a bug that sends information
about your system hardware to Microsoft when you register new software online. That glitch, covered in March, affects only users who have ethernet adapter cards, but it raised great concern among privacy-conscious Netizens. Also fixed is a bug that causes Windows 98 to crash after it has been running for 49.7 consecutive days."

send them a simple message which would appear on their screens. The send-message interface would be CGI based, the receive-message will be incorporated into Arachne.
I can create URL like online.arachne.cz. It would be so, so easy that it can appear even in 1.50 beta 3...
